Ranking based on Chennai Box Office Collections from Dec 16th 2011 to Dec 18th 2011

8. Velayudham

Velayudham is the surprise Diwali winner, although there were virtually very little pre-release talks before its release. The formulaic entertainer seems to have gone down well with fans.

7. 7aum Arivu

Murugadoss’s sci-fi thriller with Suriya, Shruti Haasan and Johnny Tri Nguyen is good in parts and average in others.

Trade Talk:

Despite its humungous production budget, the movie only made average collections, enabling the producers to breakeven.

Public Talk:

Murugadoss and Suriya have moved on to other projects!

No. Weeks Completed: 7

No. Shows in Chennai over this weekend: 33

Average Theatre Occupancy over this weekend: 20%

Collection over this weekend in Chennai: Rs. 125,418

Total collections in Chennai: Rs. 9.04 Crore

6. Uchithanai Mukarnthal

This drama is directed by Pugazendhi Thangaraj and revolves around a teenage Sri Lankan Tamil girl who gets raped. Also starring are Sathyaraj, Seeman and Sangeetha

It looks like a serious movie that touches upon significant issues but initial reviews are yet to be out.

5. Poraali

With Poraali, Samuthirakani and Sasikumar touch upon the issues of survival in the man eats man world. Sasikumar plays his part like a pro with aid from Allari Naresh, Ganja Karuppu and Swathi.

Trade Talk:

While rural centers are still reporting average collections, urban centers seem to give a cold shoulder.

Public Talk:

The movie drags a while in many parts, proving to be a pain to watch. But it has a valid message otherwise.

No. Weeks Completed: 2

No. Shows in Chennai over this weekend: 102

Average Theatre Occupancy over this weekend: 30%

Collection over this weekend in Chennai: Rs. 802,872

Total collections in Chennai: Rs. 1.25 Crore

4. Mayakkam Enna

As lyrical as the title is, Mayakkam Enna is a hard hitting movie that touches upon – among many other things in life – romance in particular.

Average grosser.

3. Mounaguru

Arulnidhi’s Mounaguru is a thriller with a lot of twists and turns and the first time director Santhakumar has done a neat job.

1. Osthe

Remaking Dabanng meant equipping Simbhu with pages and pages of punch dialogues and he does it with panache. Director Dharani stays true to the original that rocked national box offices and made a regional version of it, which is more or less doing the same.

Trade Talk:

This past week has been good with weekend registering an average of full houses.

Public Talk:

Santhanam’s comedy seems to stand out other than Simbhu’s star performance.
