AR Rahman is back with a romantic soundtrack Ek Deewana Tha

Three years ago, music maestro AR Rahman charmed cinegoers with his romantic compositions in Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na (2008). Now, he is back with a romantic soundtrack for upcoming film, Ek Deewana Tha (EDT). In a chat, Rahman speaks about the film’s music, Taj Mahal, his production plans and

new projects.

You visited Taj Mahal again for the music launch of EDT. How was it?
The Taj Mahal is a symbol of love and romance, so it’s always a unique experience to be around it. This time too I loved everything, despite a lot of fans and media (smiles). And yes, the climate was also very nice.

Tell us something about EDT’s music?
I always wanted to work with Gautham (Menon). And then, we worked together on Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (2010). For the Hindi version, I have retained the basic sound without going in for complete alteration. We had done a couple of tests (with new sounds) but the changes are very minute. I hope the audience will appreciate it.

You seem to have a special bond with Gautham Menon…
I am very fond of him. In fact, I am working with him again on a spy thriller. He is a superb guy to work with. Since he trusts you so much, you don’t want to let him down. I hope he is happy with the work on Ek Deewana Tha.

Anything new from SuperHeavy?
Yes, we are working on something. And when we are ready, you will get to hear about it.

We have heard you are working on a Rajinikanth film, that is besides the Yash Chopra movie.
Yes, I am working on Rajni sir’s Kochadaiyaan. As for Yashji’s film, we are in the middle of the (music) production stage. So, it’s too early to talk about it. Are you working on Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express?
No, I am not doing the film. I don’t know where that story came from. I already have lots of work in hand.

What’s happening to your production plans for a musical?
We are still working on the script. And until we get the right one, there’s no point talking about it. It’s my vision and story, but I am collaborating with creative minds from Hollywood, Chennai and Mumbai for the project.
