When comes to marketing a movie, poster plays one of the most important parts for attracting a viewer. After all, first impression always counts, right? So here we go -- my personal pick for "Top 10 Best Movie Posters of 2011!" right below.
Old is gold, at least for the spectacular poster of Joe Johnston's CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. It evokes the kind of good old-fashioned action adventure of yesteryears. Too bad the movie itself doesn't really lives up to its reputation.
Woody Allen's latest romantic comedy, MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, which stars Owen Wilson, is seen walking the streets with Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night painting served as an idealistic background. After all, it sets in the lovely Paris.
8. 50/50
So what's so special about this poster? It's Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen in the front picture. You can see their expressions are genuinely real, as Levitt actually shaved his head during filming. And yes, both of them were improvising in their characters while the camera kept rolling. And that alone is priceless.
It's about Saddam Hussein's sadistic son Uday (Dominic Cooper). It's also a thrusting world filled with sex, drugs, money, torture, rape and murder. So what better way to depict THE DEVIL'S DOUBLE other than painting everything with a strikingly gold palette?
Technically, the title says it all for the movie poster depicted in a series of collage shots all boxed up in many rows. If you notice properly, the images are obviously overpowering whichever words are included there. If you have seen Terrence Malick's movie in the past, you should know that image always speaks louder than words. No doubt it's a perfectly unconventional poster for an unconventional director like Malick himself.
5. THE ARTIST
It's a loving tribute to the 1920s silent movie era, so what better way to depict such movie poster other than presenting two main stars (Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo) in black and white? Monochrome colors with a touch of red has never looked this elegant and wonderfully nostalgic for this movie.
4. DRIVE
It's '70s and '80s all over again in Nicolas Winding Refn's highly-acclaimed DRIVE. The strikingly bold and cursive fonts for DRIVE and postcard-like image presenting a brooding Ryan Gosling is a perfect marriage of pure nostalgia.
When comes to popular characters, they always being placed front and center in the movie poster for instant attraction among viewers. But not so for WINNIE THE POOH. He is one of the most iconic Disney characters of all-time, so frankly, he needs no introduction at all. And this particular poster proves it all by not doing the obvious approach. Instead Winnie the Pooh and the rest of his iconic buddies are dwarfed by a strikingly eye-popping image of -- what else -- river of honey which filled up most of the background. It's a nice touch indeed.
2. SHAME
Ruffled bed sheets. This image alone is more than enough to justify the title that depict Michael Fassbender's character as a sex addict. If you notice, the title SHAME is smacked right at the middle, which is perfectly addressed the content you will about to experience once you watch it. After all, this is a NC-17 movie.
This poster totally caught me off guard. It's one of the most brilliant and creative movie posters I've ever seen in a long while -- an intense-looking Ryan Gosling holding a rolled-up Time magazine featuring a sneaky-looking George Clooney in the front cover, against his face. What a clever way to depict a two-face juxtaposition.
